The love of reading reignited among W’aria elderly

Rand West City Library officials and school learners visited the Milestone Retirement Home to reignite a passion for reading among the elderly.

Elderly citizens from the Milestone Retirement Home in Westonaria were treated to an informative visit from Rand West City Library officials as well as learners from Laerskool Modderfontein Primary who are library prefects.

This was on August 8 ahead of National Women’s Day. The learners assisted the elderly and gave them flowers during the event. One of the learners, Zintle Buthelezi also addressed the elderly and shared an inspiring message of love and appreciation.

Elderly citizens from the Milestone Retirement Home in Westonaria were all ears.

Speaking to the Randfontein Herald, Hillshaven Modderfontein Library supervisor and library assistant at Rand West City Library, Lydia van Aswegen said the event was very much welcomed by the elderly.

“We decided to host this event to show some love and appreciation to the elderly citizens of the old age home. We also wanted to spoil them with some goodies and share some information regarding the importance of libraries in communities.

“Top of the agenda was inviting them back to the library. Most of them are already members but we just wanted to stress the importance of libraries and the services we offer,” said Van Aswegen, who added she hopes that such efforts will ignite the love of reading in them once again.

The elderly were also treated to some goodie bags which contained hand cream, tissues and a bookmark among other items.
