Jannas proud of their Junior Commissioner Kabelo

Kabelo Letheya has been given the role and responsibility of Hoërskool Jan Viljoen's Junior Commissioner by Randfontein SAPS.

Hoërskool Jan Viljoen learner Kabelo Letheya is leading by example and was recently appointed the school’s very own Junior Commissioner.

Kabelo was chosen through a public speaking and debating competition which was held by the Randfontein Police Station recently. An official announcement was made to the school during an assembly by social crime prevention co-ordinator at the Randfontein Police Sergeant Portia Mabala, together with her two interns, Ntumiseng Moyane and Ntswaki Sebe.

The topic of this year’s competition included discussing the many social ills still prevalent in schools and communities today including gangsterism, bullying, robbery, theft, murder, teenage pregnancy and substance abuse among others.

“We are very proud of Kabelo and glad that our local police is getting involved with matters like this,” said school spokesperson Rudi van Wyk, who added the topic was addressed wonderfully.

“Being visible at schools and the community in this way will only bring positivity. The competition is just a great opportunity to involve the youth and a chance for them to be involved in key roles to address the problems identified. Hoërskool Jan Viljoen believes that Kabelo will make a difference and only grow from here.”

What the Junior Commissioner project is all about:

National Police spokespersons Vishnu Naidoo and Colonel Athlenda Mathe revealed that the Junior Commissioner Project was first piloted by the police in 2011 in the Free State and Limpopo. Currently, the project runs in all nine provinces.

“There are nine Provincial Commissioners at present. The target group for the project are learners from grades 8 to 10. Members of the SAPS at provincial and local levels who are responsible for implementing Safer Schools Programmes at national, provincial, cluster and police station levels create networks and partnerships with relevant stakeholders and encourage schools to participate in this programme.

“Going forward, all Junior National Commissioners will be subjected to an intensive induction programme that will provide them with in-depth knowledge and information about the SAPS, ie, the constitutional mandate of the SAPS, organisational structure such as their roles and responsibilities.”
