#MandelaDay: Mass SPCA vaccine drive a success

Residents in Mohlakeng came out in their numbers to get their four-legged friends vaccinated by the local SPCA.

Community members from in and around Randfontein heeded the call from the RandWest SPCA to get their dogs and cats vaccinated for Mandela Day.

This was on July 18 at a veld opposite Umphakati Mall where the free vaccination drive was taking place. The Randfontein Herald initially spoke to RandWest SPCA Manager Naomi de Beer who spoke about the importance of animals being vaccinated.

“Vaccinations are commonly used to protect pets from highly contagious and deadly diseases like rabies, parvovirus, distemper and kennel cough. The major goal of veterinary vaccines is to improve the health and welfare of companion animals. It is therefore very important to vaccinate animals continuously,” said Naomi.

Meanwhile, Randfontein residents Sibongile and Mandla Mongaula were some of the people who came with their pets for the free vaccinations.

According to Sibongile, she is happy to have brought their dogs for the free vaccines.

“I want our dogs to be in good health and be vaccinated against deceases that exist. This is so that we can be at ease when they play with our children and other people from our community,” she said adding that the vaccine is one way of ensuring that their dogs are well taken care of.
