Randfontein’s former mayor Elsie Kitching has died

This comes after she suffered from flu for three weeks.

Elsie Kitching, who led the Randfontein municipality in the 1980s for one term, has died at the age of 90.

She passed away on July 1 at her Wheatlands home after suffering from the flu for three weeks. At the time, the illness had entered her lungs and caused her death.

Her funeral service will be on July 7 at the NG Kerk in Randpoort at 11:00. She will be cremated thereafter.

She was born on March 20, 1933 in Wheatlands. In the 70s and 80s her husband, Jimmy Kitching, served as mayor for three terms. She also served in the municipality’s council for five years.

The Kitchings were instrumental in the growth of the Friendship Haven Old Age Home and were involved in a lot of charity work too.

They also owned a spares shop which has since been bought by Midas. This business was instrumental in providing employment opportunities for locals in the town. The two had no children of their own.
