The animal sanctuary’s founder and director, Louisa Rossouw said they spotted the puppies in dire straits.

“I received a call about puppies being stuck in a pipe in Azaadville and I went to the place and assessed the situation. It turns out that a dog had given birth to puppies and they got stuck in the pipe. We tried assisting but there was no way we could get to the puppies because the drain was narrow and non of us could fit in. One of the puppies had a wire around his neck and I knew immediately that I couldn’t just leave them there till the next day as they would be dead by then,” said Rossouw.

She added that she contacted the West Rand Emergency Services who responded to the incident.

Upon arrival, the service’s personnel flushed the puppies out with high-pressure water, and all the puppies were rescued.

“They are all healthy and fat except for the one which had a wire around its neck. We discovered that it had deep cuts but we are confident that it will heal accordingly,” said Rossouw.

She added that a lot of people were instrumental in getting the dogs to safety including Anuska Wolmarans, Chrizel van Zyl, Alida and Donald Potts, as well as Gerhard Botha and the West Rand Emergency Services.
