What is Freedom Day and why do we celebrate it?

Government calls on all South Africans to join in celebrating National Freedom Day and to extend celebrations of democracy across the country in reflecting on the achievements made as a nation.

Freedom Day, on 27 April, is an annual celebration of South Africa’s first non-racial democratic elections which took place in 1994.

The South African government’s official definition is, “An annual celebration of South Africa’s first non-racial democratic elections of 1994. It is significant because it marks the end of over 300 years of colonialism, segregation, and white minority rule and the establishment of a new democratic government led by Nelson Mandela and a new state subject to a new constitution.”

“The 2023 commemorative event will be held in the North West Province in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality. This year, the 27th of April marks the 29th anniversary of South Africa’s first democratic elections. Freedom Day is commemorated every year to honour those unsung heroes and heroines who fought for freedom and paved the way for an equal, representative, non-racial society.”

The government thus calls on all South Africans to join in celebrating National Freedom Day and to extend celebrations of democracy across the country in reflecting on the achievements made as a nation.
