Weekend arrests in District total 152: Plenty for assault-related

Intelligence and integrated driven operations by police in the West Rand yielded 152-weekend arrests including the assault of a police officer, drunken driving (16), and assault (27).

Operations held across the West Rand District this past weekend yielded great success with 152 people being arrested.

This included 27 for being undocumented foreign nationals; 17 drug-related arrests while 16 people were arrested for drunken driving and another 27 for assault-related crimes of which seven involved domestic violence. There was also a case of assaulting a police officer.

West Rand District Police spokesperson Sergeant Gloria Maswanganye explained the arrests emanated from intelligence and integrated driven operations and also included tracing of wanted suspects and day-to-day crime prevention duties.

Those arrested committed offenses such as the following:
• One for murder
• One for house robbery, kidnapping, and theft of a motor vehicle
• One for house robbery
• Three for robbery
• 14 for assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm
• One for assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm and malicious damage to property
• Three for common assault
• Two for common assault, malicious damage to property, and domestic violence
• Six for common assault and domestic violence
• Five for malicious damage to property
• One for interfering with police duties and assaulting a police officer
• Two for fraud
• One for theft out of a motor vehicle
• Eight for theft
• Three for theft and trespassing
• One for theft and intimidation
• One for housebreaking and theft
• One for housebreaking, theft, and possession of drugs
• 16 for drunken driving
• Three for possession of dagga
• One for possession of an unlicensed firearm
• One for possession of live ammunition
• Five for possession of suspected stolen property
• Eight for possession of drugs
• One for possession of a dangerous weapon
• Six for dealing drugs
• Four for selling liquor without a license
• One for perjury
• 27 for being undocumented foreign nationals

Other arrests included crimes such as shoplifting, intimidation, loitering, and contravention of protection orders.
