West Rand cops visit schools to address social ills, maintain discipline

'Learners were addressed about bullying, dangerous weapons, drugs, substance abuse, ill-discipline, gangsterism and teenage pregnancy' — West Rand District Police spokesperson.

Police in the West Rand District visited various schools which involved searches and a safety talk to increase visibility on Wednesday, February 22.

The group who visited Hoërskool Jan Viljoen included communication officers, members of the Social Crime Prevention Unit, the Randfontein Police’s Victim Friendly Room Coordinator, the Adopt-a-cop of Jan Viljoen, Gauteng West District Department of Education, Gauteng Department of Community Safety, Rand West Public Safety, Youth Desk, Gender Based Violence Brigades, Community Policing Forum, Community Patrollers and Community in Blue.

According to West Rand District Police spokesperson Captain Raymond Sebonyane, the visit aims to support teachers with social ills they encounter at the school and to maintain discipline.

“The learners were encouraged to focus on their studies, to become future leaders, be role models, to make their parents and teachers proud but most of all to make themselves proud. The school search was also conducted and illegal substances and dangerous weapons were seized.”

He added that learners were addressed about bullying, dangerous weapons, drugs, substance abuse, ill-discipline, gangsterism, and teenage pregnancy.

Learners were further encouraged to run the race and be persistent in finishing their school careers.

“The team proceeded to Lukhanyo High School in Mohlakeng for a school search and talk. The learners were addressed about bullying, dangerous weapons, drugs and substance abuse, ill-discipline, gangsterism, and teenage pregnancy and no illegal substances or dangerous weapons were found. About 600 learners were reached.”

The team proceeded to Toekomsrus for visibility.
