West Rand cops make 189 weekend arrests: drugs and illegal immigrants galore

Police in the West Rand District made close to 200 arrests during operations held from February 3 to February 5.

This past weekend saw 189 suspects being arrested during operations held across the West Rand. While 10 people were detained for domestic violence-related offences, there were also 42 arrests for illegal mining, 31 for alcohol-related crimes, and 60 for drug-related offences.

The operations started at 06:00 on Friday, February 3 and concluded at 06:00 on Sunday, February 5. The major focus, according to West Rand District Police spokesperson Sergeant Kgomotso Mogwere, was roadblocks, crime prevention, and suspect tracking.

Sergeant Mogwere also added that a total of 99 arrests were made during an Okae Molao operation in Randfontein on Saturday, February 4.

Those arrested were brought to book for various crimes, including:
• One for murder,
• 37 for possession of drugs,
• Six for possession of dagga,
• Four for possession of gold bearing material,
• Three for dealing in dagga,
• 22 for drunken driving,
• Two for being in possession of suspected stolen property,
• Nine for dealing in liquor without license,
• Two for contempt of court,
• Three for contravention of a protection order,
• Four for common robbery,
• Two for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm under domestic,
• 13 for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm,
• One for common assault,
• Five for common assault under domestic violence,
• Three for malicious damage to property under domestic violence,
• Seven for theft,
• One for malicious damage to property,
• Four for illegal mining,
• Two for theft of motor vehicle,
• One for kidnapping and common assault,
• 34 for being illegal immigrants,
• One for possession of unlicensed firearm,
• Two for possession of stolen property,
• 13 for dealing in drugs,
• One person with a warrant of arrest for possession of drugs,
• Three for housebreaking and theft.
Other offences also included trespassing, shoplifting and loitering.

All arrested suspects will appear in the various magistrates courts on the West Rand District.
