Government brings food relief to Rand West City communities

Numerous residents in Westonaria and Toekomsrus benefitted from a food relief initiative thanks to the Gauteng Department of Social Development.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development is doing its bit in fighting poverty in Rand West City by taking to the streets to distribute food parcels to the needy at the Westonaria Sports Complex on Wednesday, January 4.

It was an initiative well received by the community and aimed at offering food relief.

Point in case is 53-year-old beneficiary Nomhle Ngqoboka from Bekkersdal who had nothing but praises for the government after receiving her own food parcel.

“I am grateful to the department for being thoughtful to the disadvantaged communities by providing food relief. The impact of the high poverty rate is severe and it brings anxiety to people in society. I am the bread winner in my family, making end meets through Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) jobs.

“I earn R880 but still, it is very hard to provide. I live with my two grandchildren and the money I earn is not enough to cover our needs. I am grateful to the Gauteng Department of Social Development for this relief because I know I will have a proper meal with my family. Government also arrived just at the right time as everyone knows that January is the hardest month of the year. This is a government that cares for its people,” said Ngqoboka, who further urged government to continue caring for others who are in need.

Meanwhile, Ngqoboka is one of the hundreds of government beneficiaries who received food parcels in Westonaria.

A similar initiative also took place on the same day in Toekomsrus where others were also beneficiaries.

Gauteng government will continue with food relief initiative as the level of poverty is also escalating across the province.
