New Year’s Eve Okae Molao operation yields 146 arrests

West Rand cops made 57 arrests for assault-related crimes alone out of a total of 146 during the last Okae Molao operation for held across Mogale City, Rand West City and Merafong.

Police in the West Rand District was out in full force during the last Okae Molao operation for 2022 which was held on Saturday, December 31 making a total of 146 arrests, most of which related to assault.

One fine to the value of R1 500 for non-compliance of the Gauteng Liquor Act was also issued.

According to West Rand District Police spokesperson Sergeant Kgomotso Mogwere, the regions targeted included Mogale City, Rand West City and Merafong.

Those arrested committed the following crimes:

• Five for drunken driving
• Three for contravening trading hours under the Gauteng Liquor Act, drunken rowdiness and overcrowding
• Two for possession of drugs
• One for possession of dagga
• One for possession of a dangerous weapon
• Two undocumented persons
• One for attempted murder
• Four for armed robbery
• 38 for assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm
• Seven for common assault
• One for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm under domestic violence
• Five for housebreaking and theft
• Five for business burglary
• One for theft out of a motor vehicle
• Three for drunken driving
• One for possession of stolen property
• One for dealing in drugs (warrant of arrest)
• One for possession of suspected stolen property (warrant of arrest)
• 20 for theft
• 11 for malicious damage to property
• One for malicious damage to property under domestic violence
• One for intimidation
• Two for pointing a firearm
• One for culpable homicide
• One for crimen injuria
• Four for rape
• 12 for common assault under domestic violence.

All arrested suspects will appear in the various magistrates’ courts in the district.

West Rand District Police Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana thanked members and other law enforcement agencies for their commitment during the operation and further wished all the police members, law enforcement agencies, security services, Community Police Forum, Community Patrollers and community members a happy, peaceful, safe and prosperous new year.
