The hub, which falls under the welfare-to-work programme, is also aimed at supporting welfare recipients and beneficiaries to transition from the welfare system into the world of self-sustenance.

It is a non-profit organisation (NPO) which offers accredited training programmes in hair and beauty and masseuse for young people in the welfare system.

Speaking at the launch, MEC Hlophe challenged all the beneficiaries to make use of the opportunities afforded to them

“Our department implements various strategies and programmes to alleviate poverty in the province. The Department, through the Sustainable Livelihoods Directorate, is committed to fighting poverty and deliver a variety of services through its different programmes to the identified beneficiaries in partnership with NPO’s.

“To our beneficiaries, please make us proud after completing training. You are empowered to access job and economic opportunities as a result, you can become employers,” said Hlophe.

Showing gratitude was one of the beneficiaries who gave testimony, Zinhle Mazibuko, who is on a similar programme at the Lenasia Beauty Hub. She said she became a mother at a young age and became hopeless.

Her hope was restored when she was given an opportunity to follow her dream.

“I am now a specialist in the beauty industry because of the skills I acquired. I continue to be work in progress because soon I will become an employer to many. This opportunity came at the time, I am grateful to Social Development for funding the initiative,” said Mazibuko.

The Beauty Hub West Rand Academy will empower 115 beneficiaries in the 2022/2023 financial year. To date 91 177 young people have benefited from this programme, since its launch in 2014.
