Family forced to live with sewage issue since May

A frustrated family of Helikon Park have voiced their disgust regarding a sewage issue near 65 Arend Drive.

A family in Helikon Park is demanding that the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) pull up their socks and attend to a persisting sewage problem outside their home.

This comes as they have been made to inhale the smell which they describe as horrendous for several months. The municipality has also been sending them from pillar to post.

The sewage drain is situated near 65 Arend Drive and is a cause for concern for the family and their neighbours.

The Herald visited the family recently following a complaint and spoke to Leticha van der Westhuizen.

“The problem is that the sewage drain has been blocked and overflowing for some time now. It smells horrendous. It looks horrible and whenever we have visitors we have to explain this foul smell. We can’t have people over. It’s just an inconvenience to say the least,” Van der Westhuizen said who added that this has become a headache for her and her family.

She added that they have been trying to get a hold of the municipality since the month of May.

Municipal workers were dispatched sometime in November but allegedly got lost as they couldn’t locate the problem.

“Some people were sent out but claimed to have gotten lost and couldn’t locate the problem. My mother then put up tape where the sewage is, to try and assist them in identifying the place when they drive out again. We are now crossing fingers that some sort of help will come our way,” Van der Westhuizen pleaded.

The Herald spoke to RWCLM spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa who said a team will be dispatched to the area in question and assess the damage.

“We will then be in a position to carry out repairs,” he said.
