Litres of clean water wasted in Greenhills due to burst pipe

The clean water had been running down the street non-stop for at least 10 days.

Thousands and thousands of litres of clean water went to waste after the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) allegedly left a burst water pipe unattended for more than five days.

This was on Parcheron Street, Greenhills where clean water was flowing down the road day and night.

The Herald was called out to witness the waste on Wednesday, November 16 and upon arrival, municipal workers had just arrived and tended to the scene.

Speaking to local resident Alvirie Williams, the matter had been reported to the municipality on numerous occasions prior to workers being sent out, but nothing had been done before then.

“The clean water had been running down the street non-stop for at least 10 days. We have reported it multiple times to representatives of council and the municipal office but nothing had been done,” said Williams.

Meanwhile, another resident Tanya van Vuuren shared the same sentiments and said they too were affected by the burst water pipe.

“The water has been running for days. It started seeping into our yard and right around the house – one can imagine how frustrating this has been for us. My husband even resorted to digging a trench to guide the water away from our houses and into the street,” Van Vuuren said.

The Herald approached RWCLM spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa for comment who said they have attended to the matter and apologised for the delay in attending to the complaint.

Municipal workers were caught fixing the burst water pipe, days after it had been reported.
Municipal workers were sent out to Parcheron Street in Greenhills and attended to the problem.
