R28 flooded, R559 road partially collapses after heavy rains

The public has been made aware of the following road closures after the R559 road partially collapsed. A section of the R28 is also flooded.

The R559 road between Toekomsrus and Mohlakeng will remain closed until further notice. A section of the R28 is also flooded. This a result of heavy rains on Friday, November 11 the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport said.

In a statement issued on Saturday morning, November 12, the Gauteng MEC for Transport and Logistics Kedibone Diale-Tlabela assured motorists that the department’s emergency road maintenance teams are currently on the ground attending to various damages inflicted to the infrastructure.

The R559 partially collapsed while the R28 is flooded after the province endured heavy rains that resulted in damages to the road infrastructure. The teams are currently on site investigating the measure of the damage. The R559 road will remain closed until further notice,” the MEC announced.

The public has also been made aware of the following road closures:

• Soft road closure at the R559 and Gold Street intersection
• Hard road closure at the R559 and the last Toekomsrus access intersection
• Hard road closure at the R559 and Main Road intersection

Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport spokesperson Melitah Madiba said the MEC also urged motorists to exercise extreme caution and responsibility when driving in rainy conditions.

With more rain anticipated over the weekend, the department would like to urge residents and motorists to be on high alert and to avoid crossing flooded bridges and roads, reduce speed, increase the following distances and turn on headlights when driving in rainy conditions,” Tlabela-Diale appealed.

Melitah added that the MEC said the department is monitoring the situation on an on-going basis and giving priority to major routes affected mainly by poor road conditions and debris removal.

The Herald also approached Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa for comment on the situation and he said that the issue will be sent to the relevant person. He will then revert back with comment.
