Conference held for parents with kids with a disability

You Are Not Alone conference held at Randfontein Golf Club to raise awareness regarding some of the challenges faced by parents raising children with special needs.

Parents raising children with disabilities came out in their numbers and attended the You Are Not Alone conference hosted at the Randfontein Golf Club.

This was on October 29 and the event was meant to raise awareness regarding some of the challenges faced by parents raising children with special needs.

Event organiser Mmathabo Pule said the event was meant to have parents share their own experiences regarding the challenges they face and give each other hope in knowing that they are not alone.

“In my journey of raising my disabled 18-year-old son Chine Pule, I realised that most of the time people focus more on the kids with disabilities and forget about the parents raising those kids. That is why we decided to host the event.

“We wanted to have a platform where parents can come together and share some of their experiences with raising children with special needs and table some of their challenges as well. We also wanted to just reassure them that we are walking the journey with them and that they should never feel alone,” said Pule.

She added that it was heartbreaking to see some parents who were trying so hard to hide their pain.

Some said they were trying to be strong for their children because they didn’t want the community to feel sorry for them.
