Scores of residents attend mental health seminar

The seminar was aimed at eradicating the stigma associated with mental health illnesses and engaging with residents to get to the bottom of some of the contributing factors behind this.

The St John the Divine Orphanage Centre was packed to the rafters with residents from Mohlakeng and its surrounding areas who attended a mental health awareness seminar.

The seminar was hosted by non profit organisation Ikhaya lentuthuko Sanctuary on Saturday, October 15 and was set to commemorate mental health awareness month observed in October.

It was aimed at eradicating the stigma associated with mental health illnesses and engage with residents to get to the bottom of some of the contributing factors behind this.

Top of the agenda were issues around anxiety, depression, suicide and toxic relationships among others.

According to Ikhaya lentuthuko founder and chairperson Phindile Sibiya, they managed to fulfil their mandate.

“The event was a massive success and we had five speakers who interacted with the crowd regarding mental health issues. They started at root level and spoke about the contributing factors and went on to address ways of dealing with mental health. The people in attendance were really interested about the topics covered and they also engaged with the speakers.

“Some people even managed to come out of their shells and talk about their pain,” said Sibiya who added that the event was more of an interactive process as opposed to a lecture.
