West Rand police operation Okao Molao yields positive results

A total of 174 suspects were arrested for various crimes in the Bekkersdal and Westonaria policing precinct.

Police from the 13 different stations in the West Rand have intensified their fight against crime and have arrested more than 170 people at the N12 and R28 four-way stop between the Bekkersdal and Westonaria policing precinct.

This was on Thursday, October 20 in yet another operation Okae Molao initiative aimed at rooting out criminal elements from the streets.

Top of the list were issues around transportation of stolen property, illegal firearms, drugs, a hijacked motor vehicle and tracing of wanted suspects.

They also hit the ground running and carried out inspections on second hand good dealers and liquor outlets.

They were joined by various stakeholders such as the Rand West City Traffic Department, Gauteng Traffic Police and Community Policing Forums from the two areas, among others.

During this time, 174 suspects were arrested for various offences like murder, attempted murder, assault with intend to cause grievous bodily harm, armed robbery, tampering with essential infrastructure, contempt of court, malicious damage to property and many other offences.

Roadblocks also resulted in the issuing out of 22 traffic fines with total value of R19 500. A Toyota Yaris was also confiscated after it was found to have been stolen and crates of alcohol were also confiscated.

West Rand District Police Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana has welcomed these arrests.

“I thank all members and other law enforcement agencies for their hard work and efforts to bring suspects to book and also keeping West Rand District clean from criminal activities. I will never forget the community members who are the eyes and ears of the police and assisting us in the fight against crime in the West Rand District,” said Kekana.

All arrested suspects will appear before Westonaria Magistrates’ court soon.
