Three suspects arrested in connection to possession of unlawful firearms

Police pounced on the suspects while conducting stop and searches on the R28 in Westonaria.

Police in the West Rand District are determined on nipping the bud on lawlessness in the region and have arrested three suspects for being in possession of firearms and ammunition.

The trio, which has been identified as Basotho nationals, was arrested on the R28 in Westonaria on Sunday, October 16 while driving in a suspicious grey Toyota Hilux Raider.

Captain Solomon Sibiya from the West Rand District Police Commissioner’s office said they have intensified operations and tightened their grip on serious and violent crimes.

“Members of Westonaria Crime Prevention were conducting stop and searches on the R28 and at about 8:30pm they spotted a suspicious looking grey Toyota Hilux Raider. The members stopped the suspicious looking vehicle with three occupants. Whilst conducting searches on the vehicle and the occupants, the police recovered a 9mm Z88 parabellum firearm with its serial number scrapped off, as well as 43 rounds of ammunition,” said Sibiya.

He added that all three suspects were arrested and charged with unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
