Mining company to absorb locals in job opportunities

The mine is currently operating at a limited scale and authorities are preparing the plant for advanced operations.

Mining company Zambesi Gold is doing its bit in fighting the scourge of unemployment in the different communities of Randfontein and has committed itself to absorbing local residents in various job opportunities, when it goes fully operational.

This is word from the company’s Head of Human Resources (HR) Kagiso Sedumedi who was speaking at the company’s ribbon cutting ceremony on October 12 at the mine in Middelvlei – where they brought in a massive mill for operational purposes at their plant.

The mine is currently operating at a limited scale and authorities are preparing the plant for advanced operations.

Speaking to the Herald in an interview – Sedumedi said they are excited about their future plans and added that the purchase of the mine marked a milestone for them and will alleviate unemployment in the area.

“We brought this place from its previous owners and we’ve got big plans for it. We want to ensure that the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) residents are our priority when it comes to employment and we will not compromise on that. The only time we will employ those who do not reside in the area is in instances where we seek someone with a specialised skill that we cannot find within the community.

“In addition to that, we’ve got plans to rope in local businesses especially Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME). I can tell you with confidence that we cannot spend so much on purchasing this mine and decide to pack our bags tomorrow,” said Sedumedi who added that they are prepared to roll up their sleeves and get to work and that hopefully the mine will be fully operational in the next nine months.

So far – more than 30 locals have been absorbed at the mine and are working as general workers and artisans.

More employees will be roped in when the mine proceeds to go underground.

A help desk has also been established and will be run by Municipality’s Local Economic Development (LED) office.

This is where CV’s will be handed in and database of job seeker’s will be created for employment purposes.
