Stop vandalizing healthcare facilities!

People steal copper cables as well as generator batteries from a health care facility and this hampers the healthcare services rendered to the community.

West Rand District Health is running a campaign to encourage people throughout the region to report incidents of crime or vandalism at any of their healthcare facilities.

This comes as many of their facilities have become the regular target of criminals in the different communities. The Bekkersdal West Community Health Care Centre (CHC) had fallen victim to theft and attacks from residents.

Speaking to the Herald West Rand District Health Services communications officer Nomagugu Hloma said they were experiencing issues of vandalism and theft of copper pipes and bulk lights, which in turn affect lighting at the clinic.

“People also steal generator batteries and we have a serious problem with load-shedding,” said Hloma who added that this hampers the quality of healthcare services they render to the community.

The Bekkersdal CHC operates 24 hours a day. It opens at 07:00 and closes at 16:00, but they do render emergency services after hours.

“This is a very important health facility stationed in a community that needs these services, and people should refrain from vandalism.

“It is within walking distance from the different areas in the community,” said Hloma who added that the clinic also has ambulances that operate 24 hours a day.

She further urged people who are aware of vandalism to report it to the SAPS West Rand District Infrastructure Unit on 071 657 7058, or by going to their nearest police station.
