Town’s arachnid expert publishes new book

Have you ever wondered about scorpions and would like to learn more about them? Now you can, thanks to Randfontein scorpion and snake expert, Jonathan Leeming.

He is about to release yet another great book with the main focus this time on the fascinating scorpion. The book, titled Scorpion Nature Explorer uncovers a world that is so familiar, yet largely unknown.

Leeming said the book is packed with fascinating information such as the life cycle of scorpions, differences between males and females, anatomy, scorpion identification, behaviour, responding to threats, where they live, predators, prey and parasites, venom, how to identify medically important scorpions, communication, eyes, super senses, biotechnology, why they come into houses, and their value in the world.

The book is suitable for nurturing an interest in nature from a young age; it is equally of value to field guides and anyone who would like to know and understand more about spiders and scorpions.”

He decided to write it because it’s never been more important in human history to understand the world, and we must value and conserve every aspect of it if we want to create the future that everyone so desperately desires.

The topics in Scorpion Nature Explorer were selected by all the walks he had done and he wanted to cover questions that anyone would have when looking at a scorpion in the garden or walking in a nature reserve.

Leeming described the book as a self-study course manual. He had led scorpion walks at Kloofendal Nature Reserve which are aligned to the contents of this book, and he also has online resources that complement the book.

The book launch will be at Kloofendal Nature Reserve on Sunday, September 25 from 11:00 until 12:00. The event is free and booking is essential to secure your place.
