These were the words of the Bekkersdal SAPS station commander Colonel Phumelele Matamela who said the incidents are happening in and around the Bekkersdal policing area, and areas mostly affected are Simunye and Zuurbekom

“We get situations where suspects prey on unsuspecting victims while on their way home from tuck shops or liquor outlets.

We therefore urge the public to be extra vigilant and cautious at all times, and avoid walking in dark secluded areas.

“Remember if a woman is raped, it is not because she failed to avoid it but it’s because someone stronger forced himself on her,” said Matamela.

In a separate incident Bekkersdal police have launched a manhunt for a suspect believed to be involved in the rape of a 49-year-old woman from Zuurbekom and have released his identity kit as well.

This is with the hopes that anyone who might come across him will report him and his whereabouts to the police.
