Incomplete sports complex angers residents

Residents accuse municipality of hiring a shady contractor in order to cut costs.

Residents of Ward 2 in Randfontein are up in arms about the incomplete sports complex in Finsbury and accuse the Randfontein Local Municipality of hiring a contractor who did a shady job in order to cut costs.

The sports complex in question is in Waterberg and underwent construction some years ago and but was later put to a halt for reasons unknown.

According to concerned resident Daniel Mathebula nothing was communicated to residents with regard to the construction of the sports complex or the cancellation thereof.

“The council never informed the residents prior to the construction of the complex.

“We just saw a construction company starting to build on this land and that is when we knew what was going on.

“They didn’t even disclose a budget for the project and until this day. The residents are left in the dark,” says Mathebula.

But he says he and other residents are more concerned at the fact that children in the area are slowly but surely turning to drugs and other destructive elements in the community because there is no other form of entertainment.

“It was school holidays recently and it pained us to see children galavanting the streets smoking dagga.

“I do not even want to think about the other things they get up to,” says Mathebula.

In the meantime the Herald has contacted Randfontein Local Municipality spokesperson Lucky Chiya who says that he will contact the relevant department in this regard and revert back with comment.
