WATCH: Introducing punk rock band Punkfontein to Randfontein

The band consists of Gareth Meyer (guitar and vocals); Hugene Koekemoer (bass and vocals); Eben du Preez (lead guitar) and Chris Kennedy on drums.

Music is a way of expressing oneself and when it comes to the four band members of Punkfontein, they are happy to escape from the everyday hustle and bustle when they are on stage.

One of the members Hugene Koekemoer, 32, said their band started around 2019 just as the pandemic struck, which left their project dormant until late into 2021, although they’ve been making music over the years for other projects.

Punkfontein consists of Gareth Meyer (guitar and vocals); Hugene (bass and vocals); Eben du Preez (lead guitar) and Chris Kennedy on drums.

Explaining the genre of music they produce, Hugene said that on the street it’s called ‘punk rock’ but as a band they call it ‘nu rock’.

The reason they decided to form the band? They messed around with the idea, then life happened and they ended up in the same jam room again.

“We get inspiration for our music from bands and singers like Nickelback, The Parlotones, Dirk van der Westhuizen, Ruff Majik and local legend Tanya V,” said Hugene.

They practise for shows once or twice a week depending on their bookings, and usually play in Johannesburg and Pretoria at Rumours, Smoking Kills, Railways Café, AJ’s Pub and Jarr Bar.

According to Hugene they feel 10 years younger on stage, until they get off and their real age kicks in again. “It’s a nice escape from the everyday hustle we have when ‘adulting’.”

The dream they have for the future is to have cool shows, great times and new music.
