Hijackings on the West Rand are escalating

Hijackings on the N12 from Westonaria to Potchefstroom are on the increase.

Police warn that the West Rand District is experiencing an increase in hijackings mostly along the N12 from Westonaria to Potchefstroom via Wedela.

West Rand District Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Peter Masooa said the hotspot areas are the four-way stop at the R28 and N12, corner of N12 and P111, four-way stop to Fochville and Carletonville, Mponeng mine entrance, T-junction to Fochville, and T-junction to Wedela.

“The targeted vehicles are Volkswagen Polos, delivery trucks and vans,” said Masooa.

Some of the thugs’ modus operandi:

• Pointing a firearm
• Indicating to you that something is wrong the wheels
• Stopping their vehicle in front of yours
• Scouting for stationary vehicles while the driver is urinating
• Following you to your house and pouncing on you while you open the gate
• Removing your registration plates and showing them to you while driving so that you stop
• Using police blue lights and uniforms to stop you
• Colliding with your car from the back ‘by accident’, forcing you to stop
• Waiting along the main roads pretending to be hitchhikers
• Following you to four-way stops

Masooa urged motorists to refrain from texting on their phone while driving as it distracts them; driving during the night; stopping in deserted areas; picking up hitchhikers; and leaving their car idling while opening the gate.

He gave the following tips on how to avoid being hijacked:

• Use roads that are used frequently
• Wear a hat so that they don’t realise you are a woman
• Don’t drive slowly
• Don’t give lifts to hitchhikers
• Don’t stop when asked to; rather drive to the nearest police station or garage
• Phone family and police when you suspect that you are being followed
• Arrange with family to open the gate when you arrive home

West Rand District Police commissioner Major General Fred Kekana reminded the public always to report suspicious activities and unknown vehicles in their area, especially vehicles without registration plates.
