Young woman raped in veld: Police ID suspect

The victim reported the matter to the police and was able to identify the suspect through an identity kit.

The Carletonville Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) released an identity kit of a suspect believed to have been involved in a recent rape incident.

The incident happened in an open veld next to TM Letlhake Secondary School in Simunye at about 20:00 on Saturday, July 9.

Bekkersdal police spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane said the 21-year-old victim was walking along the open veld with a friend when they came across an armed man.

He allegedly fired a shot in front of them and demanded their cell phones and money. After the friend had dropped his cell phone and cash on the ground he was instructed to run and not look back. The thug then raped the victim and ran into the veld. The victim managed to run for help.”

The victim later reported the matter to the police and was able to identify the suspect through an identity kit.

“The suspect is said to be a Sotho-speaking male aged between 28 and 31, is approximately 1.68m tall, has a slender build, and is light in complexion with short hair. He was wearing a black jersey with white print, and black track pants with red stripes,” said Lefakane.

The station commander Colonel Phumelele Matamela condemned this kind of act, calling it heartless.

Let us refrain from exposing ourselves to harm and avoid walking along open veldts or secluded areas as there are predators waiting to prey,” said Matamela.

Anyone who might have information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect may contact the Bekkersdal police on 011 755 8040 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Alternatively contact the investigating officer Sergeant Shimi Seepolle on 082 778 9048.
