Man in his twenties arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm

After noticing the police vehicle the man started running, and when the officers chased him he dropped a knife. An unlicensed firearm was found on him.

A 27-year-old man from Bekkersdal is expected to appear before the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court after he was arrested for being in possession of a firearm believed to be unlicensed.

Bekkersdal SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane said the incident happened at approximately 04:00 on Tuesday July 5 in Spooktown when Sergeant Lucky Baloyi and Constable George Mathebula were on their routine patrol duties and noticed that a man, after seeing the police vehicle, started running.

“They gave chase and caught him. He dropped a knife on the ground and when searched, the members found a 9mm pistol without a magazine. He could not produce a licence to possess a firearm, and was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Bekkersdal police station commander Colonel Phumelele Matamela thanked the members for being vigilant and for removing a firearm from the wrong hands.
