Vandalised substation plunges Glenharvie into darkness

'The substation protection and telecommunication equipment, as well as cables were vandalised. This created a major risk to the security of supply, and compromised the integrity and reliability of electricity distribution.'

Glenharvie substation is the latest to fall victim to vandals.

According to Amanda Qithi of Eskom’s Communications and Stakeholder Department, Eskom infrastructure at the Glenharvie substation which supplies Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) was damaged severely.

“Eskom is working with the municipality to ensure that electricity is restored to the affected customers whose supply was not restored on Saturday, June 11.

“The substation protection and telecommunication equipment, as well as cables were vandalised. This created a major risk to the security of supply, and compromised the integrity and reliability of electricity distribution.

The damage to the substation is extensive and some of the equipment require replacement; as a result we are unable to give an estimated time of restoration. We will continue to work with RWCLM and communicate information about repairs and the restoration of supply when it becomes available.”

RWCLM customers are advised to contact the municipality directly for all their electricity-related enquiries. The municipality can be contacted on 087 238 2493, or the website www.randwestcity.gov.za or their customer contact centres.

Members of the public are encouraged to report illegal electricity-related activities to the law-enforcement agencies or to the Eskom Crime Line: 0800 112 722.
