KZN floods: Donations from West Rand reach Durban

Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital confirmed that donations have been sent to those affected by the devastating floods and heavy rain that had wreaked havoc in KwaZulu-Natal recently.

The Herald recently supported those affected by the devastating floods and heavy rain that had wreaked havoc in KwaZulu-Natal by donating goods to those who are struggling in these difficult times.

Herald and News editor Clinton Botha, News journalist Natasha Pretorius and Herald journalist Michelle Roodt were able to drop off donations at Netcare Krugersdorp Private Hospital thanks to the generosity of the West Rand Association for Persons with Disabilities and a few other items they donated themselves, which included blankets, clothes, water and sanitary products.

The Netcare Group opened their facilities as drop-off points for donations for the stricken residents of the coastal province who needed help.

Initially, the Netcare Group launched a major community relief project in support of the people of KwaZulu-Natal who had been impacted by the recent floods in the region.

They invited the public to donate blankets, canned and other non-perishable foods, bottled water, sanitary products, nappies and warm clothing to help alleviate some of the immediate physical hardships people were facing in the wake of the floods.

We at the Netcare Foundation have set the ball rolling with a donation of 400 blankets; however, the need in KZN is considerable, and we must move fast to get help to those in need as soon as possible,” said Mande Toubkin, general manager emergency, trauma, transplant and CSI at Netcare.

Basheer Sarwan, Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital General Manager said the donations were sent to the KwaZulu-Natal Regional Team on Friday, May 6 who then assisted to get the relief supplies to the communities that were effected.

The donations have already been distributed to various places. In some areas we are working with Gift of the Givers, and in other areas hospitals are working directly with stricken communities in their areas.”

He added that Netcare Krugersdorp Private Hospital raised R3 000 and these funds were used to purchase much-needed blankets for the people in need.

Basheer said Netcare’s values are to show compassion, caring and participation.

“Based on these values, we at Krugersdorp Hospital actively participated in this drive to assist others in need during this crisis. We are proud to come together to try and make a small difference in the lives of those who were affected. This is the time when we need to pull together to make a difference.”
