Six people were arrested for possession of a firearm suspected to have been used in vehicle hijacking on the N12 and R28 recently.

Police made the arrest after stopping a blue Volkswagen Golf driving towards Bekkersdal on Thursday March 27.

According to Sergeant Audrey Sefara, Westonaria Police spokesperson, two of those arrested were women aged 26 and 38. The male suspects were aged between 26 and 62.

Sefara explained that the arrests were made while police were patrolling on the N12 and R28 precinct following the hijacking of trucks and light motor vehicles reported recently.

Firearms were used to carry out all the crimes,” Sefara said.

While the police were patrolling at about 17:00 they noticed the suspicious blue Golf, and upon searching the vehicle they discovered a 9mm firearm with the serial number filed off and with its magazine loaded with five rounds of live ammunition.

“The suspects were arrested immediately, and the firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if it could be linked to the recent hijacking incidents,” Sefara said.
