Mr H, who recently faced a serious health threat had to undergo an emergency operation, but his medical aid would not cover the accompanying costs.

The family of Hugo Theunissen, affectionately known as ‘Mr H’, an iconic biker and national president of the Xcalibur Motor Cycle Club South Africa is grateful for every cent that has been donated towards his surgery and treatment.

Mr H, who recently faced a serious health threat had to undergo an emergency operation, but his medical aid would not cover the accompanying costs. Funds are being raised for him and he is slowly recovering.

In an exclusive interview with the Herald his daughter, Wendy Cannon, said leading up to his hospitalisation, Mr H had been complaining about stomach cramps which later caused him to collapse. However, before he could be admitted to a private hospital the family was expected to pay R46 000 up front.

“His medical aid said he had no admission funds and they couldn’t assist him – despite him having a pre-existing condition, that of a bleeding ulcer,” Cannon said.

The medical aid refused to pay any of the medical bills or hospital costs, and said they wouldn’t process any claims for him to stay in any hospital.

She added that once the required amount had been paid to the hospital on Wednesday, November 10, her father was rushed into theatre for surgery and was given 10 blood transfusions.

Cannon said after the surgery she once again contacted the medical aid to ask if they could cover the costs for the operation, but again they refused.

“All the hospital costs that have escalated since then and him being in ICU amount to R21 000 a day – not including anything else they have used.”

She said depending on how long he would stay in the ICU and when he would be moved to for example the high-care or any other section, they might need up to R250 000 until he’s discharged.

Speaking about her father, she said Mr H founded the Xcalibur Motorcycle Club in 2008 with his late fiancée, Marlene Rabie. She said Mr H has since been held in high regard in the motorcycle fraternity.

“If you needed clothes, he would not hesitate to give it to you. He would go out of his way for the needy.”

Cannon has also thanked those who were at the fundraiser for her father in Dwarskloof on Saturday November 13.

“We’re thankful for everyone who was there, and those who are continuing to make contributions as well as showing support for my father. We’re thankful to see how respected and loved he is,” Cannon said.

Sonya Moolman, Mr H’s sister, also thanked everyone who donated.

appreciated,” Moolman said.
