Over 140 arrested in mass weekend operations in West Rand District

Among the 144 people arrested during police operations over the weekend was a 39-year-old woman who had abandoned a baby.

Speaking about this past weekend’s police operations in the West Rand District, police spokesperson Sergeant Gloria Maswanganye said the continuous efforts by the men and women in blue had resulted in 144 arrests.

The arrests were made during a number of integrated operations by various police units, other law-enforcement agencies and stakeholders. These efforts included an Okae Molao operation on Saturday night October 17 in Khutsong and Carletonville.

Among those arrested was a 39-year-old woman suspected of abandoning an eight-month-old baby in Kagiso.

Other arrests were made for murder, reckless or negligent driving, drunk driving and failing to stop after an accident, common robbery, common assault and intimidation, assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, common assault and domestic violence, common assault, common assault and malicious damage to property, theft and intimidation, theft, fraud and housebreaking.

Forty-four people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, 18 for being in possession of drugs, one for being in possession of gold, 11 were found with gold-bearing material, one person had drugs and live ammunition, 13 were suspected of having stolen property in their possession, two had dangerous weapons, one pointed a firearm, and the woman was arrested for child neglect.

Further arrests were made for dealing in liquor, contravening a protection order, and interfering with police duties.

Sergeant Maswanganye said the West Rand District Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana had welcomed the arrests and thanked all members who put their efforts into creating a crime-free environment for the communities of the West Rand.
