One of six injured dies in hospital after horror N14 head-on crash

In a tragic turn of events, one of six people who were injured following a head-on collision between a bakkie and light motor vehicle on Wednesday afternoon, October 6 passed away.

Damian Grenfell from First Help Towing Services shared his account of this horrific accident on the N14 between Randfontein and Carletonville.

Grenfell explained he had received an emergency call at about 17:10 of an accident on the N14 in the direction of the R500.

“I arrived on scene and found two vehicles involved – a bakkie and a light motor vehicle – with people lying next to the vehicles.”

According to Grenfell, the Izuzu bakkie had five occupants – two men in front and a woman with the two children in the back. There was only one person in the BMW.

He explained that an ambulance arrived approximately 25 minutes after him and the two children were transported to hospital.

“The driver of the bakkie was taken to hospital by ambulance and is currently in ICU, while the woman and the other male passenger were airlifted. He sadly passed away in hospital on Thursday October 7 as per information from a family member, while the woman is critical but stable. The two children are also stable.”

He didn’t have information about the driver of the BMW.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst added, “Reports indicate that a car and bakkie were involved in a head-on collision. Paramedics found that six people, including two children, had sustained injuries ranging from moderate to critical.

“All the patients were treated on scene before being airlifted by Netcare 911 as well as other private helicopter air ambulances to hospital for further care. The moderately injured patients were treated on scene and once stabilised, they were transported by various ambulance services to hospital,” concluded Herbst.
