Fast and furious at 24

'I've been racing since I can remember' – young Sarel Oosthuizen.

Racing runs through this redhead’s veins.

At age 24, Sarel Oosthuizen told the Herald how he never passed up an opportunity to race and said it was easy to get into racing because you only need a car, bakkie or a bike.

“I’ve been racing since I can remember and got into the sport because of my dad,” he said.

Sarel races with his bright green Nissan 1400 bakkie which is his pride and joy. He not only uses it to race, it is his general mode of transport.

He started working on his bakkie approximately nine years ago and couldn’t remember exactly how much money he had put into it, only that it was quite a lot.

“I chose to race with a bakkie because it’s my first car. My dad and I did a little bit of work on it and then went racing. Every time we would race more and work more on the car. It is special to us,” he added.

When it comes to his achievements, Sarel said he started his own business and got a sponsor, making a lot of friends in the process.

“I like drag racing because of the adrenaline, speed, the people we meet and friends we make.”

He stated that he hasn’t had any serious accidents while racing.

“We race on a private road as well as at Tarlton and Midvaal Raceway.”
