Rand Water calls on residents to use water sparingly

'All consumers are urged to respect water, as without it there is no life' – Rand Water.

As South Africa’s water resources continue to be under excessive pressure from a growing population, ongoing development, pollution, wetland destruction and the effects of global warming, Rand Water is urging consumers to continue using water sparingly.

In a statement issued last Friday, Rand Water spokesperson, Justice Mohale, said the amount of water available for use remains the same and despite plans to increase storage capacity by building new reservoirs and laying new pipelines, the demand for water currently outstrips supply.

The only answer to high water consumption is educating and influencing consumers to change their attitudes towards water usage. Water can be conserved through fixing leaking taps or replacing the worn-out ones, and reporting water-related leakages when they occur.”

He said one of the basic principles consumers can apply for maximum water conservation is to ensure that drinkable water is not misused or wasted.

“When it happens consumers should know that potable water is redirected back into the waste-water treatment system. It would require more funds to ensure that same water is cleaned for other uses. All consumers are urged to respect water, as without it there is no life.”
