Tackling serious crime in and around Bekkersdal

'Work closely with the police to minimise crime' – police appeal to public.

Members of the West Rand District Police held a crime-awareness campaign to address serious crime in Bekkersdal last week.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, police also educated the public about the latest modus operandi criminals used when committing crimes, and about crime hot spots.

“We encouraged them to work closely with the police to minimise crime,” Lefakane said.

She added the public were sensitised on tips to avoid hijackings, and business and residential burglaries, by distributing pamphlets with the information.

“The community was also warned about buying, selling and dealing in stolen property, and they were urged to report any criminal behaviour to the police immediately.

“The entourage later proceeded to the N12/ R28 crossing and further engaged with motorist on hijacking trends whiles the traffic police enforced their by-laws in terms of illegal hawkers,” Lefakane added.

Colonel Phumelele Matamela, Bekkersdal Police station commander said, “We have a constitutional obligation to ensure all acts which may threaten the safety and security of any communities are policed, therefore let us work together and make Bekkersdal a better place.”
