Semi-auto rifle, ammo found abandoned in public street

Police seize semi-automatic rifle and ammunition found abandoned in Mohlakeng.

A semi-automatic rifle as well as ammunition were found abandoned in a bag near Ramotsane Street in Extension 4 Mohlakeng on Tuesday, 13 April.

According to Sergeant Kgomotso Mogwere, spokesperson for the West Rand District Police, they received a tip-off from a community member at around 8.30am about the suspicious, abandoned bag.

“The police immediately attended the scene. A community member showed them the black bag and inside was a Dashprod SAR M14 .223 Remington semi-automatic rifle with its serial number filed off, one magazine and 72 rounds of ammunition. The rifle and ammunition were seized and will be taken to the forensics laboratory for further investigation and possible linkages.”

Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, the Randfontein Police station commander commended the community for being vigilant and sharing information with the police.

The community should be the eyes and ears of the police as we are working around the clock to apprehend suspects and eliminate crime. Our main objective is to make the West Rand a crime-free area,” Brigadier Manamela said.
