No help for elderly woman with sewage-flooded yard

A Toekomsrus family said it is no longer pleasant for them to be at home as the stench is terrible.

A Toekomsrus family said they are forced to live in bad conditions, as their yard is flooded with sewage and no one is coming to their aid.

Alice Goodgall, 61, who has been the owner of the property for over 30 years, said it is no longer pleasant for her to be at home as the stench is terrible.

“How can an old lady like me live in conditions like these? Is this really fair?” Alice asked.

She said she was at her wits’ end as even the local councillors have turned their backs on her. “I don’t remember how many times I’ve been to the municipality to report this,” she added.

She said being left to her own devices, she had no choice but to clean up the sewage as she was concerned about the health of her grandchildren living with her.

“I am an old woman whose health is deteriorating because of these conditions – I mean the sewage is running right in front of my kitchen door. I need help urgently,” Alice pleaded.

Pule Ramphore, Toekomsrus Ward 20 councillor, who confirmed knowledge of the problem, said clogged drains are a major issue for many residents in his ward.

“This became worse after the municipality outsourced the function to an outside company. Some locals are upset with the municipality’s decision to use an outside company while so many local people need jobs,” Ramphore.
