Gerrit Maritz Primary leads by example in big SPCA donation

Randwest SPCA received a much-needed donation of dog and cat food all thanks to Laerskool Gerrit Maritz Primary School from Westonaria.

A much-needed donation of dog and cat food was made to the RandWest SPCA, thanks to Laerskool Gerrit Maritz Primary School last Wednesday.

This was an effort to relieve the NGO’s financial distress.

Sonia Eksteen, the school spokesperson said the gesture came after the school recently visited the SPCA and saw it was in dire need of help.

Sonia said they also realised that in order for the SPCA to keep its doors open and care for the animals, the NGO had to be assisted in any way possible

“We thank all our learners who have taken part in the fundraiser and made sure that it was a success,” Sonia said.

She praised the SPCA for its relentless efforts to rescue and care for abandoned animals; making sure that they are fed and kept in safe shelters.

“It is indeed a never-ending task because there are animals that need to be cared for. You’re always ready to take endless phone calls asking you to pick up animals that are in danger or injured.

“We are grateful that the vulnerable dogs and cats can count on you for their safety. You never hesitate to save their lives and we appreciate you for being their heroes,” Sonia said.

She also urged the community to take note of the slogan: Adopt, don’t shop!

“Animals are very close to our hearts. We knew about the SPCA’s plea for help when we read about its possible closure in the Herald late last year. We knew that they needed our help, and we wanted to show that as one of the local schools, we care deeply about our furry and four-legged friends,” Sonia said.
