Libraries open again

After a year of lockdown, Rand West City Libraries have opened their doors to the public again.

The Rand West City Libraries said their doors are now open to the public.

People who still have books they have borrowed before lockdown are urged to return them to the libraries on weekdays between 8am and 4pm. There will be no fines.

Thandeka Legae, spokesperson of the Rand West City Libraries and the Programmes Librarian said after having being closed for a year due to lockdown, they have reopened.

We have a Library Fine Free period until the end of April as we celebrate the annual South African Library Week,” Legae said.

They want to give those who couldn’t return books in the past year enough time by extending the fine-free period to April when the annual World Book Day is celebrated on 23 April.

“This coincided very well with our reopening and we thought we should welcome back bookworms by starting on a clean slate; without charging any fines for books they couldn’t return as a result of lockdown,” Legae said.

She said accumulated fines on books will be removed, but bookworms can only start borrowing books from their libraries again as of 6 April.
