Train station fire: Preliminary investigation reveals homeless to blame

Bennie Mohlabeng, Regional Commander of the Randfontein Fire and Rescue Services revealed more details about the fire at the Homelake train station on Wednesday.

No injuries were reported following the fire at the Homelake train station on Wednesday, 6 January.

Bennie Mohlabeng, Regional Commander of the Randfontein Fire and Rescue Services confirmed to the Herald that they received a call at approximately 2.15pm informing them that the Homelake train station was on fire.

He said firefighters were on scene within five minutes and it took them 30 minutes to extinguish the fire.

The fire was in the ticket office and speculations are that it was caused by homeless people who made a fire to keep themselves warm. It was not an electrical problem that got out of control,” he stated.

He added that significant damage was done to the structure and he advised the community to avoid using it because it could collapse and cause injuries, even death.
