DIY Christmas tree with our Stephan

Culemborg Park's Stephan Hendricks shows us how to make a creative Christmas tree from pallet wood.

It’s the festive season and your Christmas tree might be too old or it may be too expensive to buy one. So why not try something new and crafty and make your own?

The Herald recently visited Stephan Hendricks from Pallet Smart to show you how simple and easy this DIY project is to do at home, and how beautiful it will look in your home.

So get out your tools and art supplies to make a creative Christmas tree from pallet wood.

Things you will need for this project: 

• (2) 3mm planks of pallet wood
• (17) 30mm screws
• wood glue
• screwdriver
• jigsaw, cut-off saw, or a hand saw
• sandpaper
• tape measure
• ruler
• paint, decorations or anything else that you want to decorate your tree with

Step 1: 

Start by cutting the two 3mm planks of pallet wood into the following sizes: 1x 900mm; 1x550mm; 1x500mm; 1x450mm; 1x400mm; 1x350mm; 1x300mm; 1x250mm; 1x200mm.

Step 2: 

Measure 90mm inwards from the outer corner and make a mark, then take the ruler and rule a straight line down to the bottom outer corner. Cut on the line with your jigsaw, cut-off saw or a hand saw.

Step 3: 

Smooth the edges with sandpaper and apply wood glue on the 900mm piece of wood.

Step 4: 

Turn all of the planks around and arrange them in order from small to big, then stick down the 900mm piece of glued wood aligned in the middle of the other precut planks.

Step 5:

Screw in two screws on each piece of pallet.

Screw two screws into each piece of pallet.

Step 6:

Add a wooden star 150mm in circumference to the top of the tree. The star can be handmade or store-bought.

Step 7: 

Get creative! Paint the tree or leave it raw.
