District Development Model discussed in R’fontein

'It is a new integrated, district-based, service delivery approach aimed at fast-tracking service delivery and ensuring that municipalities are adequately supported and resourced to carry out their mandate.'

Fikile Majola, Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) visited the West Rand District Municipality (WRDM) offices in Randfontein on Wednesday, 2 December.

He expressed his satisfaction at the level of readiness by the WRDM for the implementation of the District Development Model (DDM).

The WRDM comprises three local municipalities, namely Merafong City, Mogale City and Rand West City and is led by the Executive Mayor, Councillor Dennis Thabe. President Cyril Ramaphosa deployed ministers and deputy ministers as champions to work with various districts to expedite the implementation of the District Development Model (DDM).

Majola is the DDM Champion for the West Rand District.

According to Sidwell Medupe, the departmental spokesperson, the DDM is a new integrated planning model for cooperative governance.

“It is a new integrated, district-based, service delivery approach aimed at fast-tracking service delivery and ensuring that municipalities are adequately supported and resourced to carry out their mandate. The DDM is also to be used as an intergovernmental vehicle for integrated and coordinated implementation of all of the government’s Covid-19 and Gender Based Violence Response Plans in all of the countryā€™s 52 districts.”

Majola was given presentations on the socio-political and economic situation in the District, including projects that are planned and some of that are under way.

We have now agreed that we will have a follow-up meeting and have asked all the officials from national and provincial spheres, and District Municipalities to meet and prepare a more concise presentation on the projects that are implementable in the next financial year,ā€ he said.

ā€œI am quite happy; I think weā€™ve made substantial progress for a first meeting and we had very useful presentations. I think that because of the level of cooperation between different municipalities, this District will make a lot of progress in the Gauteng province,ā€ said Majola.
