Management of the Westonaria Police have warned that with the year drawing to a close, crime will also be increasing as criminal will be jostling to make a quick buck.
Sergeant Audery Sefara, Westonaria Police spokesperson said, “We are advising people to avoid, if they can, withdrawing large sums of money, or else be accompanied by two or more people to the ATMs, because we have seen more cases of people being robbed,” Sefara said.
She said in order to prevent house robberies, people should be on the lookout for any suspicious persons or vehicles near their properties.
Enhance security through fitting access doors with security gates, and install burglar bars on windows. Make sure that you don’t let strangers into your home,” Sefara warned.
She advised people to always verify details of those they want to employ, and check the authenticity of contractors before they allow them access to their premises.
Sefara said to remain safe, people should avoid asking for help from strangers at ATMs; displaying money and valuables in public; asking for directions from a stranger – instead ask from law-enforcement agents; and making themselves targets by buying in unsafe places.
Keep your personal belongings like a handbag and a wallet safe, and always observe your surroundings,” Sefara said.
Colonel Selvan Moonsamy, Westonaria Police station commander urged people to comply with the Disaster Management Act 57 of 2002 Covid-related regulations.
