Close to 300 arrested this past weekend

Police across the West Rand District were involved in another operation which yielded 275 arrests in total.

Another successful weekend operation across the West Rand District led to 275 arrests.

Police and other law-enforcement agencies again joined forces and continued with crime-intelligence operations in the District from Friday, 6 November to Sunday, 8 November.

According to Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, spokesperson for the West Rand District Police and the Randfontein Police, the operation focused on crime prevention, rural safety, roadblocks, stops-and-searches for drugs and illegal firearms, and compliance with Disaster Management Act regulations.

A breakdown of those arrested for specific crimes included: 

• Cash-in-transit (one)
• Murder (five)
• Possession of unlicensed firearms and bribery (three)
• Possession of unlicensed firearms (nine)
• Armed robbery (one)
• Common robbery (four)
• Robbery (nine)
• Assault on police and interference (one)
• Rape (12)
• Sexual assault (one)
• Possession of firearms and ammunition (three)
• Armed robbery and assault to do grievous bodily harm (one)
• Assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm (seven)
• Common assault (two)
• Theft (six)

The remaining number of suspects were arrested for crimes including possession of suspected stolen motor vehicles, housebreaking implements, housebreaking and theft, theft of copper cable, possession of housebreaking implements, domestic violence related cases, contravention of protection order, theft of motor vehicle, dealing in dagga, possession of suspected stolen property, possession of drugs, possession of dagga, possession of dangerous weapon, possession of gold-bearing material, possession of suspected stolen copper, drunken driving, malicious damage to property, dealing in liquor without a licence, theft, use of motor vehicle without owner’s consent, reckless and negligent driving, assault and intimidation, theft and malicious damage to property, damage to infrastructure and theft, shoplifting, drinking in public, drunk and disorderly, illegal mining and illegal immigrants.

“All arrested suspects will appear in different Magistrates’ Courts in the district,” said Hendricks.

Major General Fred Kekana, the West Rand District Police Commissioner, welcomed the successes of the weekend and thanked all police and other law-enforcement agencies who made sure that the community is safe. He further emphasised that the members must take care of themselves and the lives of others.

“The members need to refrain from bribery, help and support our community, and prevent crime,” said Kekana.
