Another desperate plea from our SPCA – This might be their last

The Randwest SPCA is pleading with the community not to forsake those animals that are neglected, lost, unwanted, abandoned and abused.

The Rand West SPCA, which has a branch in Randfontein and Westonaria respectively, is in dire need of funds or they will have to close their doors.

According to Janette Muller, the Rand West SPCA acting chairperson and the Society’s liaison officer, these two branches have been operational with little to no community support and in addition, the Rand West City Local Municipality has failed to pay for services rendered.

“Municipalities are legally obligated to provide, to the local community, a sustainable animal pound for stray animals to promote a safe and healthy environment,” said Janette.

She added that since 2019, the municipality has failed to sign the service level agreement with the SPCA, and has failed to pay pound fees due for fulfilling the municipal pound function, which function the SPCA continued to fulfil, despite non-payment by the municipality.

For the past three years, we have tirelessly attempted to revive and prevent the closure of the Rand West SPCA, but unfortunately, the Rand West SPCA still lacks a stable management committee and sustainable funding.”

Janette said the current situation is dire and there are barely enough funds to cover their expenses for the next two months. Thereafter the doors of the Rand West SPCA will finally have to close.

“Take notice that the NSPCA prohibits SPCAs to fearmonger with threats of closure; however this is no threat but rather the stark reality that the Rand West SPCA is currently facing,” Janette explained.

They are pleading with the community not to forsake those animals that are neglected, lost, unwanted, abandoned and abused.

Our community cannot afford to lose their local SPCA. But what is the solution? The solution is you, our community. Rand West SPCA can only survive with the help of individuals and businesses from our community.”

She added that you, the community can make a difference to an animal’s life, be the voice of the voiceless, save the Rand West SPCA and make it sustainable.
