According to the 59-year-old, there are many health benefits linked to cycling, which he would like to share with the community.

The Randmark Walk, Run and Cycle Club member explained that his health was deteriorating at one stage in his life and he looked for something that could help him get back in shape.

A friend of mine then suggested that we should take up cycling and do the Argus together. At the time I did not even know what the Argus was. In 1997, we did our first Argus,” Johan said.

He said it took him three years to reach the level of fitness he aimed for. It encouraged him even more when more people he knew and family got involved in cycling. He said he would recommend cycling for anyone who has a reasonable fitness level so that they can do it properly.

Start cycling a short distance, and as your fitness improves, take on longer distances. “Some people take up cycling to shed some weight, and some adjust their eating habits as well,” Johan said.

He added that in order to burn fat, one should do a cycling session at least every day.

“Cycling is not always just about exercise; friendships are built and stories exchanged while pedalling on the road. I would recommend cycling to everybody as a lifestyle to remain healthy and active. It is ideal to get family and friends involved too,” Johan said.
