Racing resumes at Dirt Bronco

Dirt Bronco officially hosted its first race since the start of lockdown on Sunday, 13 September 2020.

The announcement that sporting events could be resumed under lockdown Level 3 brought jubilation to participants and fans.

In dirt biking, the green light brought elation to track owners too. Dirt Bronco officially hosted its first race since the start of lockdown on Sunday, 13 September.

It was a MotoKids event for amateur riders from 12 years and below. The children participated in motocross and enduro events in their different age groups and classes.

Conditions were very windy and dusty – a piece of cake to enduro riders who could argue that they have seen harsher conditions. Riders and mechanics started coming in from 6am, and the first race started two hours later. MSA, however, made it clear that no spectators would be allowed at events.

Dirt Bronco’s owner, Eddie Wantenaar was happy that the sport returned to the track, but the lack of spectators left him feeling quite disappointed.

I understand we need to limit the spread; the lack of spectators means income is a lot less though,” Eddie lamented.

It was a successful day nonetheless – more so for the riders. One of the organisers and rider development coach, Neil van der Ross had praise for the children, who had fun and didn’t really show rustiness even after months of not riding. Littleman Mafokate shone and was among the winners, marking his return by continuing where he left off before lockdown.

Dirt Bronco is set to host a race for more developed and older riders soon in the form of the Inland Motocross Championship, hosted earlier by TerraTopia, ERORA and Smoking Pistons.

To maintain all Covid-19 regulations, every entrant was screened and there was no usual prize-giving at the end to maintain social distancing.
