Beach buggy club hits West Rand

'The main goal of the group is to bring together a bunch of people sharing their love for air-cooled engines.'

The parking lot of Cradlestone Mall was decorated with brightly coloured beach buggies in the name of charity on Sunday, 6 September.

The West Rand Beach Buggy Club has only been around for a few months but already has 98 members. On Sunday they had their first charity run.

Johan Wolmarans, a member of the club, explained that the idea for the club came when he met Mark Delport, a fellow beach buggy enthusiast at the Randfontein Show.

“The main goal of the group is to bring together a bunch of people sharing their love for air-cooled engines. In the process we have fun doing rides together, and sharing and helping each other with advice, assistance and technical information,” Johan said.

But this group does not only help each other, and the aim of Sunday’s gathering was to give back to an organisation that gives so much to the community, The Salvation Army Krugersdorp Goodwill Centre.

“The group decided to do at least one charity run every six months and this one was our first,” Johan explained. Johan said they chose the Salvation Army because like with their group there are no politics, no gender and no race; they only want to help.

The club asked their members to donate anything from food to household items as part of their entrance fee. The number of items such as toothpaste, dishwashing liquid and non-perishable foods the group donated was overwhelming. But the club did not only donate items.

They also hosted a braai and a family day for all, and even members from Meyerton, Boksburg and Fochville joined them.

“It only feels good to help someone, but having fun in the process is a bonus. Anyone with a beach buggy can join. We even have a few beetles that join us on the rides,” Johan said.

The club’s next outing will be a big braai day at the Hobby Park and they are inviting anyone to join. For more details, visit their Facebook page a Westrand Beach Buggies.
